Website developer and IT expert Makeda Paul, very suddenly and tragically died from a heart attack resulting from the minor injury of a broken foot. She was but 39 years young and full of life. Makeda was a born leader. Often opening the door for others and especially women, Makeda inspired others to travel, explore, see and enjoy the world. As an IT expert and world traveller, Makeda defied the stereotypes that women should not travel alone; and that women should not be in the IT profession. Boldly going where others would only dream of, Makeda was the embodied personification of being your own leader. She danced to the beat of her own steel pan.

Makeda leaves behind her mother, Dr. Marilyn Patricia Johncilla, who was also very much Makeda’s best friend and confidant. Dr. Johncilla is very devastated and remains in shock by this sudden loss of her daughter and only child. Makeda was a selfless, and very loving daughter, yet she fearlessly and fiercely was also her own person and leader. In lieu of flowers, and to memorialize Makeda’s leader spirit, the family would appreciate donations to “The Makeda Ayana Paul Foundation for Black Women’s Leadership” at https://www.gofundme.com/makedapaul. This Foundation will promote education, training and celebrate Black women’s leadership globally. All monies will go towards scholarships, teaching, research and conferences in raising awareness about Black women’s leadership through the example of Makeda Paul.
