David Sylvester
February 2, 1965 - November 17, 2014
It is with great sadness that I deliver the difficult news of the passing of our incredible colleague and friend,
David Sylvester. This is truly a terrible loss for Dave’s friends and family, the Mircom family, and the Fire and
Life Safety industry at large.
As many of you are aware, Dave was diagnosed with the return of Stage-4 cancer approximately one year
ago. Over time, this terrible disease wracked his body, but it did not take his brilliant mind and unbreakable
spirit until the very last day. Dave passed away peacefully, in his sleep, on Monday, November 17th, 2014.
Dave’s positive outlook on life, even during the most difficult of times, was inspirational – even contagious.
He was infectious in his enthusiasm, future thinking in his approach to safety, and was genuinely engaged in
making the world a better and safer place. He was a truly unique and irreplaceable human being.
Dave has always been very passionate about his work, enjoying an impressive career. In the early 1980s,
Dave started out installing fire alarm systems as an apprentice electrician, later becoming a Master
Electrician/Electronic Technician. Dave gained over 22 years of engineering experience, within fire
protection and life safety systems and with related services, as a designer, building systems manager and
consultant. Additionally, Dave was a working member of multiple ULC committees and provided instruction
for Seneca College’s Fire Protection Engineering Program and George Brown College’s Electrical Pre-exam
training program. Dave’s work has been published and he has written countless on-line and in-class courses
for the fire alarm industry.
Mircom was very lucky to employ an individual such as Dave. In the short two years he has been with the
company, Dave set in motion countless positive changes that have helped Mircom and our team grow,
improve and expand. We are a better place to work and learn as a result of his impact.
Dave leaves behind wife Lucy, and two young daughters, Samantha and Madison. A proud and loving father,
Dave wanted nothing more than for his daughters to get the best possible education. Mircom will be making
a donation to his daughters’ education to ensure that Dave’s dream comes to fruition.
Dave will be profoundly missed by everyone whose lives he touched. We will no doubt always remember
Dave – our close friend, colleague, and mentor – with heartfelt fondness and a smile on our faces.
Thoughts and prayers,
Mark Falbo
