Dr. Ronald Bell
August 18, 1945 - August 29, 2013
Dr. Ronald James Bell, DDS, of Oakville, Ontario passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 29th, in Warkworth, Ontario.
Ron was born August 18, 1945 to James and Mary Bell in Guelph, Ontario, growing up in Milton, where he spent his childhood and teenage years. Ron went on to graduate from the University of Western Ontario with a Bachelor's degree in Zoology in 1967 and from the University of Toronto with a Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1971. He successfully completed a residency at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, a Health Canada internship placement at the Sioux Lookout Hospital north of Kenora and then even more remotely, Wunnumim Lake.
Supportive of his profession throughout his career, he began his involvement along with others in establishing the current Dental and Emergency On-Call Services at the then Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. He continued locally on the executives of the Halton-Peel Dental Association and the Ontario Dental Association, and eventually nationally, as an Ontario appointee to the Board of Governors of the Canadian Dental Association. He was elected and served as president of the Halton-Peel and Ontario bodies during his tenure. In 2006 and 2009 he served as a General Council appointee from Halton-Peel to the provincial organization.
In dental school, Ron was awarded the Dental Student Society Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Undergraduate Life of the Faculty of Dentistry. He has been honored locally with the Award of Distinction from the H.P.D.A, provincially being a recipient of the O.D.A.'s Barnabus Day Award for Distinguished Service and the Life Honorary Award, and internationally by invitational membership into the Pierre Fauchard Academy.
An avid golfer from age six, Ron served as president of the Oakville Golf Club in 1994, where his focus was on junior golf introducing new and innovative programs, starting as he did, with six year olds.
A lifelong car enthusiast, in 1997 Ron joined the Porsche Club of America and became a student in the driver education program. Rookie of the Year, Enthusiast of the Year, Upper Canada Region and International P.C.A. Instructorships in High Performance Driving, as well as the occasional turns at Mosport, Watkins Glen, and Daytona in P.C.A. Club Racing events kept Ron deeply involved with his passion for driving.
Dr. Bell is survived by long-time, beloved companion Karen Raymond, by daughter Carolyn Bell (Tyler Davidson), and step-children David Begg (Joanne) and Meredith Simpson. He took great joy in his three grandchildren, Rohan (7), Connor (7) and Benjamin (6).
A gathering of family and friends will be held on Wednesday, September 4, from 4 to 7pm at the Il Fornello restaurant at 203 North Service Rd W. in Oakville. There will be a time for reflection at 6pm.
Ron’s family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Durham Down’s Syndrome Association at www.san453.wix.com/ddsa or by using the "donations" link at the bottom of this page.
