Pickell, Barbara (nee James)

Barbara (Barb) Pickell, 74, of Oakville, Ontario passed away peacefully at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital on December 8, 2013.

Barb was born on November 10, 1939 in Stephenville Crossing, Newfoundland to Kathleen (Kay) and Robert (Jimmy) James. She lived in Bay Roberts and St. John’s before moving with her family to Cooksville in 1954. After the marriage to her best friend Brian in 1961 they remained in Mississauga before moving to Oakville in the early 1990’s.

Barb led an active and joyful life. When she wasn’t playing tennis or spending time in her garden she loved to entertain, cook, travel and spend quality time with her friends and family. Her active lifestyle allowed Barb the opportunity to enjoy all life had to offer. Barb was not only an incredible wife, mother, sister, aunt and friend but a woman with an enormous heart.

Barb is survived by her loving husband of 52 years, Brian and her daughter Catherine. Barb will be dearly missed by her brothers, Bob and Peter and her sisters Elizabeth and Margaret. Dear sister-in-law to Hilary, Jette, Don, Alexander, Ray, Elaine and predeceased Billy. Barb loved her nieces and nephews and respective families with such warmth and vigour. Barb will be missed by her nieces Lisa, Kristen, Alison (Dane), Anastasia (Douglas), Pauline and Eileen. Nephews, Richard (Melissa), David (Stacey), Brad (Lynda), Darrow, Spencer, James, Alex, Nikolas and Leslie. Great nieces, Brittany, Brooke, Lia, Ella and Sasha. Great nephews Byron, Matthew, Hunter, Cole, Aidan and great great nephew Aiden. Barb will be fondly remembered by Patti, mother of Matthew and Brooke and special friends and family, the Hatchers, as well as all of her cousins and their respective families.

Barb’s strong sense of passion towards family was emulated with her enormous circle of friends. Barb will be deeply missed by all of her dearest friends near and far. Her presence on the tennis court in each practice and match will be missed both here at home and with her team in Florida.

The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the staff at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital for their care and support during this difficult time. Without their grace, comfort and respect the passing of Barb would have been far more difficult. In addition, Brian and Catherine would like to express their appreciation of the support they have received from all friends and family during this difficult time.

A private cremation will take place and a celebration of life will be held in the new year where all of her family and friends can celebrate the life that was lived each day to the fullest. Following the celebration, her family will travel back home to Newfoundland for the scattering of her ashes.

Although donations to a charity of your choice are appreciated, simply your fond memories and stories are all the family wish for.

Please take a moment to sign the online guestbook and share photographs of your memories of Barb for the family as a memory book will be created for the family.
